# How do Developers select and plan Product Backlog items during Sprint Planning?

During [Sprint Planning](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/sprint-planning/), Developers select [Product Backlog](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/a-scrum-artifact-that-consists-of-an-ordered-list-of-the-work-to-be-done-in-order-to-create-maintain-and-sustain-a-product-managed-by-the-product-owner/) items from the top of the [Product Backlog](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/a-scrum-artifact-that-consists-of-an-ordered-list-of-the-work-to-be-done-in-order-to-create-maintain-and-sustain-a-product-managed-by-the-product-owner/), unless there are constraints that prevent selecting specific items. They then plan the work necessary to create an [Increment](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/increment/) that meets the [Definition of Done](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/definition-of-done/).

This process may involve breaking the work down into smaller, more manageable units. By doing so, Developers can better understand and manage the tasks required to complete the [Product Backlog](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/a-scrum-artifact-that-consists-of-an-ordered-list-of-the-work-to-be-done-in-order-to-create-maintain-and-sustain-a-product-managed-by-the-product-owner/) items.
