# What does the name ‘Sprint’ imply, and why might it be misleading?

The name 'Sprint' implies rushing or racing to get work done, but this is not the intention. Instead, a Sprint is simply a period during which an [Increment](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/increment/) is created. There is no requirement to move faster than usual, and the pace should be sustainable for the [Scrum Team](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/scrum-team/).

The term 'Sprint' probably sounded appealing in the early days of Scrum due to its connotation of speed, which might have attracted decision-makers and early adopters. Over time, however, the term has gained a new meaning for those familiar with Scrum, and changing it now would be impractical.
