# What is a reason for cancelling a Sprint in Scrum?

A Sprint can be cancelled if the [Sprint Goal](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/sprint-goal/) becomes obsolete. This could happen when the completion of the work planned for the Sprint no longer makes sense. For instance, the planned work might lose its [Value](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/value/) due to shifts in market demands, technological advancements, or strategic changes within the company.

Cancelling a Sprint is a significant decision because it disrupts the [Workflow](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/workflow/) and introduces [Waste](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/waste/). As such, it is not taken lightly and is considered a rare occurrence. Only the [Product Owner](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/product-owner/) has the authority to cancel a Sprint, ensuring that the decision is made with careful consideration of all relevant factors.
