# What is the Increment in Scrum?

The [Increment](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/increment/) is one of the three primary artifacts in Scrum. It is a body of inspectable, Done work that supports the principles of [Empiricism](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/empiricism/). By the end of a Sprint, the new [Increment](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/increment/) must be Done, which means it must be in a usable condition and meet the [Scrum Team](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/scrum-team/)’s [Definition of Done](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/definition-of-done/).

The [Increment](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/increment/) is not just a single piece of work but the sum of all the [Product Backlog](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/a-scrum-artifact-that-consists-of-an-ordered-list-of-the-work-to-be-done-in-order-to-create-maintain-and-sustain-a-product-managed-by-the-product-owner/) items that have been completed during the Sprint, combined with the increments from all previous Sprints. It provides a clear picture of the progress made and is a crucial part of the Scrum process.
