# What role do Developers play in Product Backlog refinement?

During [Product Backlog](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/a-scrum-artifact-that-consists-of-an-ordered-list-of-the-work-to-be-done-in-order-to-create-maintain-and-sustain-a-product-managed-by-the-product-owner/) [Refinement](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/refinement/), Developers are responsible for sizing the items. This involves estimating the effort required to complete each item, which helps in planning and prioritising the work. The [Product Owner](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/product-owner/) may guide the Developers by helping them understand the trade-offs involved in different decisions.

Developers may also work individually or in small groups to refine items, sometimes with the [Product Owner](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/product-owner/) and sometimes independently. This flexibility allows them to approach [Refinement](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/refinement/) in a way that best suits their [Workflow](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/workflow/) and enhances their understanding of the [Product Backlog](https://www.thescrummaster.co.uk/glossary/a-scrum-artifact-that-consists-of-an-ordered-list-of-the-work-to-be-done-in-order-to-create-maintain-and-sustain-a-product-managed-by-the-product-owner/) items.
