The prevailing anxiety among software developers regarding potential job losses due to AI and automation advancements may be misplaced, according to recent analyses and data. Contrary to fears of an impending “software developer apocalypse,” evidence suggests that the profession is not only surviving but thriving, with employment numbers reaching record highs and productivity increases enhancing the field’s vitality.

James Bessen, a professor at Boston University, has been addressing concerns about AI displacing jobs in software development. He argues that AI’s integration into the software development process has not led to the reduction of jobs but has rather shifted the nature of the work. According to Bessen, AI helps automate routine coding tasks which, in turn, boosts developer productivity and allows software engineers to focus more on complex, creative aspects of software design and problem-solving. This shift is portrayed positively, enhancing the roles of developers rather than making them redundant.

Supporting Bessen’s viewpoints are the employment statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics which showed a robust growth in software developer jobs. From just under 2.1 million in 2022, the number of employed software developers has increased by over 400,000, or 19%, with total employment rising to 2.5 million by February in the following year. Globally, the trend appears similar, with estimates of the software developer population rising from 17.3 million in 2022 to about 20.8 million and then to over 47 million according to different surveys. This surge indicates a growing industry rather than one in decline.

Outside of the U.S., perspectives mirror these findings. Magdalena Balazinska, the director of the University of Washington’s engineering school, emphasized to students that AI is expanding job opportunities rather than cutting them down. She highlighted how AI is transforming developers’ tasks to focus less on routine coding and more on managing AI-powered coding tools and engaging in higher-level design and innovation.

Market analyses and skills assessments indicate that certain abilities are becoming increasingly essential. Skills linked to major cloud providers, AI security, SQL, Python, and even smaller language models are in high demand. This aligns with the evolving landscape of software development where AI plays a complementary role, enhancing the human workforce’s capabilities rather than substituting it entirely.

However, not all feedback within the industry is optimistic. Some developers express concerns about their job security and the increasing complexity of tasks with AI’s introduction. Anecdotal evidence suggests that project managers may assign increasingly challenging tasks as AI tools streamline simpler ones. Despite these concerns, the overall sentiment supported by research remains positive regarding the impact of AI on employment within software development.

Bessen’s research contends that AI has significantly improved the productivity of software developers. He notes that since the introduction of AI tools like ChatGPT, productivity has seen a notable increase, growing at 6% per year from 2022 through 2025, compared to 3.9% annually from 2003 to 2022. Moreover, the real output of software is rising even faster than productivity, at about 9.3% per year, suggesting a robust demand for software which requires an expanding workforce, despite the increasing efficiency per developer.
