OKRs stands for Objectives and Key Results. At their simplest, OKRs are a way to answer two basic but critical questions – What do we want to achieve and how will we know if we’re making progress?
The Objective describes the direction. It’s qualitative, clear, and focused on what really matters. The Key Results describe success. They are specific, measurable, and make progress visible. For example, an Objective might describe improving customer experience. The Key Results then make that real by defining what would need to change for you to confidently say, “Yes, this is better.”
This matters because most organisations don’t struggle with effort, they struggle with focus. Teams are busy, capable, and well-intentioned, but priorities are often unclear or constantly shifting. Work gets done, but it’s not always obvious whether it’s moving the organisation forward. OKRs help by creating shared clarity. They make priorities explicit, surface trade-offs, and give teams a clear sense of what success looks like right now. They shift conversations away from activity and towards outcomes.
When used well, OKRs are not a reporting tool. They’re a thinking and alignment tool. They help leaders set direction and help teams make better decisions every day.
This is exactly why TheScrumMaster.co.uk has partnered with OKR Mentors. Scrum helps teams deliver effectively. OKRs help organisations focus on the right things. Together, they close the gap between strategy and execution. Our upcoming OKR Champion courses are designed to show exactly how.
