5 Scrum Questions – What happens before Sprint 1?

I often get asked questions about Scrum from contacts via email. To help as many people as possible in future I will be sharing the questions I am posed and the answers I provide.

I hope you will find them useful.

This next batch is around starting to use Scrum. Here we go:

When is the Sprint length defined? Can sprint length be different for Sprint 1 and again in Sprint 2
Sprint length is defined before Sprint 1. Sprint length should stay consistent but can be changed if the Scrum Team decides to do so based on inspection learnings. This should be an exceptional occurrence.

When do security concern need to be dealt with for a release? Do we add them in Product Backlog? Does the Product backlog include all type of technical initiatives and requirements?
The Product Backlog includes all work that is required for a Development Team to carry out for an increment to be done. So if security is a concern, it must be included. This can also be covered as part of a team’s definition of done.

How do we form new Scrum Teams? At what stage?
Before Sprint 1. Scrum is a framework and as such does not define how this should happen.

What is the time box for a Daily Scrum? 15 min or 15 min or less?
A time box is a maximum amount of time spent. So it would be 15 mins or less.

Is there a Sprint 0?
There is no such thing as Sprint 0. Every Sprint should result in some valuable Increment creation. You will need to do some startup activities before your first Sprint which will include, but not limited to – filling the Scrum roles, deciding Sprint length and starting to create a Product Backlog.
