How Training Is Changing & Why You Need to Stay Ahead

Corporate training has been through more change in the last five years than in the previous two decades. The pace is accelerating.

To keep skills relevant and careers moving forward, professionals need to rethink how they learn and how they apply what they learn.

The Last Five Years (2020–2025)

  • Pandemic-driven digitisation – COVID forced companies to abandon traditional in-person training and adopt virtual classrooms, eLearning, and blended formats almost overnight. What was once “the future of learning” became the only option.
  • Rise of self-paced learning – Employees now expect training on demand – accessible anytime, anywhere – whether through learning management systems, microlearning platforms, or mobile apps.
  • Focus on skills over courses – Organisations are moving away from measuring hours of training delivered. The new focus is on skills gained and applied, with digital skills, leadership, and remote collaboration topping the list.
  • Learn and apply immediately – Research and experience show that the most effective learning happens when knowledge can be applied straight away. Passive consumption of content is no longer enough.
  • Explosion of digital content providers – Platforms such as Coursera and Udemy became mainstream alternatives to in-house training. However, the quality is mixed, with much of it falling well short of what professionals truly need to build capability.

The Next Five Years (2025–2030)

  • AI-driven personalisation – Training content will increasingly be tailored to each learner’s role, skills gaps, and performance. AI will deliver learning pathways unique to every individual.
  • Skill-based hiring and development – Organisations will put less emphasis on formal degrees and more on validated skills. This shift means training will be judged by the practical capabilities it builds.
  • Learning ecosystems – HR systems, LMSs, and external content providers will integrate more deeply, creating a seamless “skills cloud” across organisations.
  • Adaptability and continuous learning – With rapid technological change, lifelong learning will move from being desirable to essential. It will be the only way to stay relevant in an AI-driven workplace.
  • Short-form and experiential learning – Bite-sized content, gamification, real-world projects, and cohort-based programmes will dominate, replacing long, one-off courses.
  • Human + AI blend – Trainers will not disappear, but their role will shift toward facilitation, mentoring, and helping learners contextualise AI-delivered knowledge.
