In an article on Inc.com, Minda Zetlin explains that if you want to learn more deeply and understand complex stuff better, you should make it a habit to explain what you’ve just learned to yourself. This simple move boosts comprehension significantly.

The act of explaining, even silently or to yourself, triggers the “explanation effect,” a cognitive tool shown to improve understanding.

Ironically, the people who’d benefit most from this trick tend to avoid it. Those who feel they don’t understand enough are least likely to try explaining what they’ve learned. They instead choose study methods that feel safer or more familiar but are less effective.

After reading or learning something new, explain it in any of these ways: speak out loud to yourself, think it through in your head, or write a summary in a notebook or journal. Even spending just 15 minutes writing reflections after an eight-hour training or learning session made people perform 23% better in tests than those who didn’t reflect.

If you want better learning returns, build into your process a step where you explain what you’ve learned. Push yourself even when you’re unsure. It takes little time but gives a noticeable payoff.
