The Product Owner accountability was introduced in Scrum as a response to the traditional product management approach prevalent in many organisations. This traditional approach often relied on a hierarchical command structure to solve problems and make decisions, leading to several issues such as late, low-Value, and low-quality product deliveries. Despite the principles of Agility being around for decades, many organisations continued to adhere to this outdated method, which proved to be problematic.
In these traditional settings, the management external to the team dictated what the team should do and how to do it, believing that those higher up the hierarchy would make the best decisions. However, this often resulted in delayed decision-making and undesirable outcomes. The Product Owner accountability was added to Scrum to address these inefficiencies by ensuring that one person is ultimately responsible for maximising the product’s Value, streamlining the decision-making process.
