Early in my career, I was tasked with supporting a complex daily billing process that required extensive manual intervention. The system involved numerous slow-running scripts and multiple manual steps, necessitating round-the-clock monitoring by staff working in 8-hour shifts. Recognising the inefficiency, I developed a set of scripts to automate these processes, which reduced the effort from 8 hours to less than 1 hour per shift.
The automation not only minimised the need for human intervention but also improved the quality by reducing errors. Eventually, even the verification process was automated, requiring human involvement only in rare instances when something went wrong. This resulted in significant cost savings and higher accuracy, showcasing how automation can dramatically improve efficiency and quality in complex processes.
