Scrum was first implemented in 1993 by Jeff Sutherland and his colleagues at the Easel Corporation. They were inspired by an article from the Harvard Business Review titled “The New New Product Development Game,” written by Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka in 1986. This article detailed how companies like Honda, Canon, and Fuji-Xerox achieved superior results using a scalable, team-based technique in product development.
The approach described in the HBR article emphasised self-organising, Cross-Functional teams working towards common goals. Although these examples were outside the software industry, they inspired those in software development to Experiment with these concepts to see if they could achieve similar success.
