What techniques can be used to order a Product Backlog?

There are various techniques available for ordering a Product Backlog, each offering a different approach to prioritisation. One popular method is the MoSCoW technique, which categorises PBIs into ‘Must have,’ ‘Should have,’ ‘Could have,’ and ‘Won’t have’ based on their importance to the product. This technique helps teams focus on essential features while also recognising less critical items.

Another useful technique is Relative Weighting, where PBIs are scored based on their cost and benefit. The priority score is calculated by dividing the benefit score by the cost score, allowing teams to prioritise items that offer the most Value for the least effort. Additional techniques like Buy a Feature, Thirty-Five, and 25/10 Crowdsourcing involve collaborative decision-making processes, enabling stakeholders to participate actively in prioritising PBIs based on their preferences and insights.
