Predictive approaches are not suitable for complex work because such work involves outputs, outcomes, and challenges that cannot be well predicted or fully understood beforehand. In complex environments, we cannot standardise processes or rely on best practices because each challenge is unique and requires its own new solution.
Traditional predictive methods, which rely on detailed upfront planning and linear execution, are ill-equipped to handle the dynamic nature of complex projects. These methods often lead to overruns in plans and budgets, declining quality, and unmet expectations. In contrast, adaptive approaches like Agile and Scrum, which embrace uncertainty and continuously adapt to new information, are better suited for managing complex work effectively.
