A practical example of automation improving efficiency comes from a large publisher adopting Scrum. The Project Manager spent the majority of their time creating reports for Senior Management, which was a highly time-consuming process. Recognising this as an opportunity for automation, I collaborated with the Project Manager to automate 90% of the report generation. We used exports from Jira and scripts to process the data, reducing the time spent on reporting to less than an hour per week.
This automation allowed the Project Manager to reclaim three days per week, which they then used to support the team and contribute more effectively to the product development. The increased efficiency not only freed up valuable time but also demonstrated how automation could transform routine tasks, leading to better utilisation of skills and resources within the team.
