Scrum Teams using Kanban typically track four basic Flow Metrics: Work In Progress (WIP), Cycle Time, Work Item Age, and Throughput. These Metrics provide a comprehensive view of the team’s Workflow and help manage the Flow of work effectively.
Work In Progress (WIP) measures the number of work items that have been started but not yet finished. Limiting WIP can help teams maintain a sustainable pace, manage capacity, and prevent overload. Cycle Time tracks the amount of time a Work Item spends in active development from start to finish, offering insights into delivery times for future work. Work Item Age monitors the time elapsed since a Work Item started and can highlight stalled tasks needing attention. Throughput measures the number of work items completed over a specific period, helping teams gauge productivity and capacity to meet customer demands.
